Modernization of the power supply and control system for the main ventilation fans at the MDPA potash mine

In the first quarter of 2025, Elgór+Hansen S.A. and FAMUR completed a comprehensive project to modernize the power supply and control system for the main ventilation fans at the MDPA – MINES DE POTASSE D’ALSACE potash mine located in Wittelsheim, France.

Zakres prac

  • Delivery, installation, and commissioning of a complete power supply and control system,
  • Replacement of an outdated system based on worn-out components,
  • Integration of a modern solution developed and manufactured by Elgór+Hansen.

The new system was built based on:

  • Two 5/1.0/0.5/0.23kV transwitches with a capacity of 630kVA,
  • Digital, intrinsically safe control and technological interlocking system,
  • Local and remote control panels,
  • Prepared for operation from the SMARTMINE computer operator station – our proprietary control system.

Initial condition and need for modernization

The existing power supply system included, among others:

  • 3 flameproof transformers (5/1kV 700kVA, 5/1kV 1000kVA, 1/0.5kV 315kVA),
  • 6 flameproof 1kV circuit breakers,
  • 3 flameproof 0.5kV circuit breakers,
  • 1 flameproof 1kV/0.22kV 5kVA transformer unit.

Redundancy and safety

The new system has been designed to ensure full redundancy of the main fans. In the event of a failure of one of the primary power sources, it is possible to immediately switch to emergency power, ensuring continuous ventilation of the workings and the safety of the crew.

Implementation results

  • Implementation time: 6 working days – including transport, assembly, commissioning, and switching of systems,
  • Maintenance of mine continuity for 5 working days,
  • Positive technical acceptance after the trial period,
